Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper course, the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster theory course looks at more detailed navigational techniques, specifically for those looking to undertake longer passages and, in particular, navigation at night. For those who have built up some miles and are looking to the next stage of their boating journey, the RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster theory is a great step and essential preparation for the Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster and Yachtmaster offshore practical exam. You’ll hone your skills in lights and shapes, course shaping and plotting and tidal knowledge including secondary ports and tide gates. Additionally, you will learn how to take and interpret weather forecasts and to plot weather systems. You’ll extend your collision regulation knowledge and understand the requirements for arriving and entering a foreign port. All this and much much more. As with the Day Skipper shorebased course, the RYA’s specially designed chart plotter software will be used during the course to give you a real taste of modern electronic navigation. The course is taught over 40 hours with three exam papers. It can be covered as classroom sessions, by distance learning or a combination of both.

Course topics include:

  • position fixing
  • course shaping and plotting
  • tidal knowledge
  • use of almanacs and admiralty publications
  • electronic position finding equipment
  • taking and interpreting forecasts
  • plotting weather systems
  • weather predictions using a barometer and by observation
  • collision regulations
  • customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad

The course also allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.

Our RYA shorebased classes are run from the fabulous facilities at Guildford County School. Learning in a group classroom environment is fun and offers a way to make new sailing friends as well as pick up tips’n’tricks from like-minded people.

It’s a relaxed environment and you’ll have plenty of time to ask the instructor questions.

There’s plenty of free parking on site.

  • What time does it start?

    Evening classes

Our evening classes are normally scheduled to start at 1800hrs. They run until 2200hrs as this enables us to deliver the pre-requisite hours and complete the course syllabus. If there are any changes to this you will be advised in the joining instructions (sent via email) for your specific course.

    Weekend days

The weekend day-sessions are 8 hours and normally start at 0900hrs. Your instructor or course joining instructions will advise you if this is different, however no classroom based course starts before 0900hrs.

  • What happens if I miss a week?

We understand that people lead busy lives and have other commitments. Missing one session isn't usually a problem, unless it's the first session. Missing more than one session is not ideal.

We do provide online materials for revision which can normally be used to catchup should you miss a week.

  • Is there homework?

As part of the leaning experience, you will be expected to do homework between the classes. This is all done online where the ability to check your answers and get additional support is provided as part of the course.

  • Is there anywhere to park my car?

There is free parking onsite near the classrooms. Don't forget, it's only a 5 min walk from Guildford station too.

    Evening Classes

If there isn't available space in the onsite carpark (very rare), you can park in marked bays on the residential roads around the school, usually for free after 6pm.

    Weekend Classes

There is usually no problem with free parking onsite for any weekend sessions. We will endeavour to warn ahead of time if the site is likely to be busy and therefore a problem for parking.

Note: We do not take any responsibility for the security of your vehicle or possessions in your vehicle.
